Volume 6 of 1909 Harvard Classics set. Includes historical introduction with study notes and glossary by Charles W. Eliot, LLD. Robert Burns was born in Scotland in 1759. His family was very poor but his father encouraged his son's education. After his father's death 1784 he attempted farming, but was not a success. In order to raise money he published his first volume of poetry in 1786 which was unexpectedly successful. As he published more he became a literary celebrity, He was best known for his Scottish poetry and songs. About his song-making, the great number of his lyrics sprang from actual emotional experiences and almost all were composed to old Scottish melodies. In the 593 pages of this book you may find many familiar lyrics and melodies recognized even today.
