There are so many ways to celebrate light, and Graham sings many of them in this collection of shaped, rhymed poems. The design is extraordinarily clever: it's one thing to make a poem in the shape of a match or a lightbulb, but quite another to make one in the shape of a firefly or a spotlight. Type fonts bulge or slim down depending on the shape of the poem, switching from serif to sanserif in the process. Illustrator Nancy Davis uses matte colors and flat geometric forms in a way that keeps the focus on the shaped poems themselves. Cameras, televisions, fireworks, and even the refrigerator light have their own verses. Like J. This is a delightful collection of shaped poems all dealing with the theme of light. Candles, lightbulbs and lightening are just a few of the shapes used with wonderful words and images to create poems for children, parents and grandparents. A great book to read by candlelight.

I have found that most children love repetition and poetry in their stories. This is a book that most children will love. It has beautiful language that is not above even a young child's level. It flows very well, and my daughter at 21 months enjoys the rhymes in it.

Great book- I purchased this for use in homeschooling for an activity- We lit candles and had Daddy read the poems about light/fire/etc. Fun to look at- the poems are in different shapes- and excellent way to end a study on fire and light on a "lite" note (no pun intended).

Excellent science fiction

This is an excellent science fiction - combining science, mythology and adventure in one pulsating and absorbing story line. There is also quite a bit of educational information for young readers. I got to know about the Daruma Doll and the underground city of Derinkuyu in the context of an engrossing story. Highly recommended.

"Tales of a Musical Journey" is written in a form of Chapters about Magical Kingdom of Sounds. From the very first chapter Mrs.Irina Gorin addresses physical aspect of ones' body posture at the piano as well as hands' position and the touch. She compares "graceful hands" gestures with the "whipping willow tree", upper body relaxation with "flying eagle", tone production with "jell-o", work on hands' transition from one octave to another with "rainbow", and arm weight with "swinging monkey". Notes recognition is build by so-called "Middle C Position", which is very easy for children to follow. Each exercise can be practiced with the CD, included with the book. My students love practicing little songs from "Tales of a Musical Journey". The principal "technique" focus in this first book is on developing good tone production with three middle fingers - 3, 2, and 4, which helps children to develop a good sense of touch and how firm a key needs to be depressed. From the first songs children learn how to "listen" to the sound and its variety. This method book is especially helpful with children 4 and 5 years old. Children at this age are learning how to become attentive and patient in their studies. Following stories from "Tales of a Musical Journey", children are introduced to different types of notes, first as long and short sounds. Learning musical alphabet is given in a form of matching first letter of an animal name - "C" is for Cat, "D is for Dog etc. Children love playing such games.
I have taught from many different method books over the last 14 years and have to say that "Tales of a Musical Journey" has become my favorite within last two years.

Best piano method on the market

Whether you are new to piano pedagogy (teaching) or have been teaching piano for years this method will prove to be an outstanding book for a young beginner. It is incredibly innovative, engaging, and interesting for any child. It's heart is in Russian school of playing, with some very interesting innovative ideas that greatly contribute to the musical, artistic, and physical development of the young beginner.
The magical characters help the child to remember and connect with the musical world. The importance of sound development, through the freedom of hands is approached through creative exercises on and away from the piano. In addition, development of musical expression is also addressed through beautiful story telling.
I am a college professor and for my pedagogy class I have looked through most of the methods on the market, Gorin's method has proven to be the most successful.
After about 7 month of piano lessons a 4 year old student couls fluently read from Bass clef F (bellow mid.C) up to Treble G, in addition, he is able to clap any rhythmical variation, from whole notes to quarter notes.
Give it a try and you will not regret it!

About the Author
Karen A. Mingst is Lockwood Chair Professor at the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce at the University of Kentucky. She holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin. A specialist in international organization, international law, and international political economy, Professor Mingst has conducted research in Western Europe, West Africa, and Yugoslavia. She is the author or editor of seven books and numerous academic articles. She has frequently taught the introductory international relations course. In addition, she has traveled and lectured extensively at universities around the globe.

Jack L. Snyder is the Robert and Renee Belfer Professor of International Relations in the Department of Political Science and the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies at Columbia University. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia. His books include Electing to Fight: Why Emerging Democracies Go to War, coauthored with Edward D. Mansfield (MIT Press, 2007) and From Voting to Violence: Democratization and Nationalist Conflict (W.W. Norton, 2000). His articles on such topics as crisis diplomacy, democratization and war, nationalism, imperial overstretch, war crimes tribunals versus amnesties, international relations theory after September 11, and anarchy and culture have appeared in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, International Organization, International Security, and World Politics. Professor Snyder teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on nationalism, comparative methods, and grand strategy. Professor Snyder is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and an elected member of Columbia's Arts and Sciences Policy and Planning Committee. He is the editor of the Norton Series in World Politics.

Please WELCOME back Professor Derek Rowntree's LEARN HOW TO STUDY, now in its 5th edition. First published 45 years ago, it has since helped more than a MILLION readers around the world in a variety of languages.

Back in 1970 it was the ORIGINAL — the first book about studying to offer readers the friendly, tutorial style (incorporating 'interactive' activities with feedback) that has since become such a feature of Open University teaching materials and has been adopted by numerous other authors of books for students.

Since 1988, however, Professor Rowntree was too busy pioneering elearning courses at the Open University to have time to update his book. Consequently it soon seemed to him to be not relevant enough to the very courses he was developing, so he let it go out of print for the last ten years. Now, in his retirement, and many years richer in experience of student learning, he has at last found time to rewrite the book into the 21st century of learning.

LEARN HOW TO STUDY is not a collection of handy hints and quick fixes. Of course, it includes chapters on the critical reading of texts (in print and on screen), making notes, learning from seminars, lectures and new media, writing essays, tackling exams successfully, and so on — but presented in a way that encourages students to become reflective and exploratory about their approaches to learning and choose for themselves which ways of studying best meet their purposes. Professor Rowntree suggests to students that the three things they need to do to succeed are as follows:
•to understand what they want out of learning and what other people (especially tutors) expect of them.
•to develop approaches that will enable them to acquire the kind of learning that will satisfy their tutors while also getting what they themselves want from the process.
•to convincingly demonstrate that learning in both formal and informal assessment situations.
And this ‘virtual tutorial’ aims to help readers succeed in these goals, despite the 'hidden curriculum' and the often conflicting pressures within their learning situation.

coz I'm old like that. Maybe because it's an english book of ...

SIMPLY PROFOUND
I cannot believe there is no review for this which is why I am doing it, from a personal see me feel me standpoint, coz I'm old like that. Maybe because it's an english book of the modest open university don't blow your horn approach which has this book so quiet whilst other mega hype bollux books sell the 'secrets' of success for 50 bucks +.
OK, now my story of how I was introduced to this book over 3 decades ago whilst on the Rapid Track at college in London, we were mostly international students paying big fees so wanted to complete courses in half time. We had special Study Techniques which were incredible, the only experience I've had so profound in changing behaviour was The Alexandra Technique in adjusting how we sit, walk, talk etc.
Our Study Techniques had us adjust our patterns of reading, writing, skimming, discussion by simply minor modifications whose affects were incredible. Remember we were international students, from all parts of former British empire yet we were all equally affected. We passed in half the time of regular students, I went onto study in the US where the simple profound study approach of Derek Rowntree became habitual.
I have not mentioned any of the 'techniques' here as much cognitive research has been done since with many books and videos on sale those days. But none put it in such a simple and profound way with NO hype, like this beautiful simple book does.
It's the simplicity of these techniques which is why I rate this book so highly, so small, so light with NO hype and has disappears off my shelf numerous times because it's so simply profound.

Although it is not a very recent edition, it is a great book, all its topics in finance are amazing.

The Definitive Textbook on International Financial Markets

A very readable (and detailed if you read those parts) introduction to the subject of international finance.
The standard MBA text book, and one of a handful of finance books recently deemed significant enough to be translated into Chinese.
Also, how can you resist a book with sections on topics such as 'Banking Telecommunications and the Information Superspyway' as well as dry and very detailed math on derivatives trading models.

Western Cultural bias

The author starts with a detailed and well-diagramed analysis of how humanity's ideas evolve through stages such as ritual, myths etc, before they finally reach religion and philosophy. Deep-rooted archetypes store various psychological fixations, which he shows with art from around the world. The conclusion is in a diagram with various pictures. It shows `anxiety-threat' on one side, and this is depicted with Kali in all her details. On the other side of the diagram is `hope-promise' depicted by a picture of the Greco-Roman Goddess Diana. The message of several hundred pages basically boils down to the conclusion that one must rise above the evil-terror-anxiety-threat side that drives humans (i.e. the archetype of Kali) and move to the positive side depicted by Diana. This is a college textbook on psychology by a major publisher.
Nobody would argue with the suggestion to move from negative to positive archetypes. But a better method of illustration would have been to use another Hindu deity also as the hope-promise archetype in the diagram. Hinduism is rather rich in deities depicting positive aspects, and there is no need to switch to the context of the West when depicting the positive side. The Hindu Goddess has millions of forms in which people have conceived of her, of which four are especially popular: wisdom (Maheshwari), strength (Durga-Kali), harmony (Lakshmi), and perfection (Saraswati). Within the `strength' aspect, Kali is but one of her many manifestations, Durga being another popular form. And even within Kali, there are at least three levels of worship: as terrorizer to be feared and placated is the lowest view; as Shakti expressing herself as the power of nature is the middle level; and at an even higher level she is the divine power operating through the devotee. The book's author's understanding of Kali is incorrect. But even if she were the icon of evil, it would still not justify in a textbook on psychology to make the contrast with Diana. He should not have departed from Hindu symbolism when it came to explaining the positive outlook on life. His methodology portrayed the West as the positive culture while the East as the proverbial `world negating' burden on humanity. In fact, any religion could supply the author with both kinds of art, the dark side and the light side.
If he wanted to remain in Western iconography throughout, he could have chosen negative pictures from the holocaust, witch burning, and genocide of the Native Americans, the list of candidates for negative imagery being rather long. So why would a college text depict the dark side using an Eastern tradition and the positive side using Western tradition, unless there is also a subliminal message intended to position one culture better than the other. This is a case where the facts in isolation might be correct but their juxtaposition and context creates a false impression. The effect of this psychology book might be that clinical psychologists will attend weekend seminars on diagnosing and treatment "Kali syndrome", as the archetype afflicting clients who suffer from negative conditions.
Amazingly, other colleagues of this psychologist have been very busy appropriating the pioneering knowledge of Indic spiritualists precisely in the realm of higher states of consciousness - including Jung, Wilber, Maslow, etc. So one team of psychologists takes the cream of Indic contribution an re-labels it as their own, while the other team such as this book's writer, are busy enhancing the negative stereotypes about the same source tradition.

Once-fashionable biased trash

Some people may have wondered whether it's possible to define human geography in some useful, rational way. After all, people need space, food, warmth, company and so on - surely it ought to be possible to apply human ingenuity to deduce useful and true overview statements? Maybe; but this book is simple-minded garbage on things like 'racism', prostitution, materialism, sexuality, the wonders of Marx and what have you. Huge bibliography of books that could only have been written by force-funded liars. Avoid this, or study it as a sort of textbook example of worthlessness.

There are much better videos and literature available online for free.

The “book” is actually a collection of poorly rendered photographs attempting to show the production of paper cartridges. It is incomplete, full of grammatical and spelling errors, and is confusing with its descriptions in conflict with the photographs. It was never proof read.

A list of required materials at the onset includes “salt peter” but this ingredient is never addressed in the text. It would have been helpful to know prior to purchasing this pamphlet (I simply can’t bring myself to call it a book), that unmodified reproduction revolvers like we all have, can’t use these cartridges until modified to accept the longer profile of the paper cartridges.

A price of $4.95 would make it a worthwhile addition for the photographs, but at $17 you money is better spent elsewhere on vetted literature of the period.

Very good book! Like how the author takes, what seems to be, a complicated task and makes it easy to understand. Also appreciate the extra pages for notes and the label samples in the back.
