The unique feature of the book is that history and international politics have been combined with natural resources for the first time under one title. Original pictures from the scene aid in understanding the conundrum. Most of the material in this book came directly from the author’s interaction with ordinary Afghans, government officials and most importantly US and NATO military personnel working in Afghanistan. More emphasis has been placed on the southern part of the country where the Taliban insurgency is strong and where the civilian infrastructure is non-existent. Over the course of his research for this book, Dr. Yousafzai was starkly reminded of the fact that most military and civilian personnel have no idea why the Afghans behave the way they do. Ironically, most military officials also have no clue why they are there in the first place! Regardless of their knowledge of the Afghan quagmire, he salutes their dedication to the invaluable service they have been providing since the war began in late 2001. The book is divided into three parts detailing the history of the Afghan war; the present scenario and whether the country’s future can be predicted by looking at its bloody history. What kind of lessons the US/NATO officials learned from the Afghan adventure have been detailed throughout the book. As a native Pashtun, Dr. Yousafzai grew up in Peshawar and witnessed the rise and fall of military dictatorships, religious extremism and the plight of ordinary Pashtuns across the Durand Line. The first part of the book describes some of those experiences which are a direct result of his 20 years of working experience in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. The second part of the book summarizes the untapped mineral wealth of Afghanistan and the efforts to control its natural resources. Situation on the ground is discussed in some detail in the third part of the book along with a roadmap towards the uncertain future.

About the Author
The author is a geoscience professional and has worked in the South and Central Asian regions for the past 20 years. He received his B.S. degree from University of Peshawar in 1993 and a Ph.D. degree from Kent State University in 2005. Dr. Yousafzai has developed a deep understanding of the region from cultural, linguistic, ethnic, geographic, geologic and religious perspectives. He has published numerous articles on the natural resources of Afghanistan and Pakistan. He is an amateur photographer and an avid traveler. Excellent read

Excellent work! I have to be honest, I don't read much Non fiction books about my country, perhaps growing up in that region abstains me from even looking back. But I loved reading about some of my history again!
If you want to understand whats going on in Afghanistan and surrounding areas, this is the book you need.When reading this book and coming up to the contemporary parts about Russian occupation, the civil war and the upcoming of the Taliban movement it became clear what went so desperately wrong for the Afghan state and its people and "what will happen" as per author's prediction.

Inspired writing and chilling facts, I would recommend it to EVERYONE.

Great for Piano Beginners!

The John W. Schaum Piano series is an excellent way to introduce children to the piano. Geared to the early grade school level, A-The Red Book is a follow-up to Pre-A-The Green Book. All the piano books in this series feature colorful illustrations, easy-to-read notes, and simple hand positions. The book progresses from very simple melodies at the start to more complex "melody and chord" songs at the end. Children love to sing along as they play the notes. I have found this to be a great way to for younger kids to learn to read music and begin their study of the piano.

Excellent for kids and adults

I used the older version of this book when I was a child and it was excellent. Easy to read and understand. Perfect for learning to play the piano if you want to go at your own pace. I had a private instructor as well but the book was the key to my lessons. I have almost the entire collection but they are a bit out-dated so I plan to buy the new ones soon for my own review, and also so I can teach my kids to play when they are old enough. I loved the John W. Schaum series. Note: These books aren't really theory based so if you intend to teach yourself, you'll also need a book to really teach you the basics (Tip: I used the AB Guide to music theory by Eric Taylor, it's alittle difficult to find now though), once you master the theory, you'll be on your way to playing tons of songs. Fun fun fun!!!

A great series of learn-to-play books

I was very happy to be able to find the John W. Schaum Piano Course books. Many years ago, I was taught to play piano using these books and now I'm able to teach my children the same way. This book provides a very simply step-by-step approach to piano playing that is challenging but still easy enough for children to understand and to practice what they've learned on their own.

Loved the book,I thought it was good,thought that it.Would have been more of a coloring book more of the same thing I would be ordering,I just got used to coloring on the black and gray tattoo artist,.My big surprise was for my son birthday on.May 10th he'll be 40year-old didn't ask nevertheless,but he's wife,had already bought it wrapped in couple weeks ago,but didn't ask or tell me about it.He likes dragons to color and Read about so late again.Bt I well serve.My problem is that I have no prenter so,if you could help me out of it.I would take a gift certificate.On my next orders.Cause you'll know that I ordered a lot more than I should be.Expected adult stress out coloring books for you'll.even look at some of yours small printer just black and white unwell don't have to be a colorful.

This was a waste of Money.... With a title like that it should be a book of all books, but it failed.... I recommend u go on a search engine to find art like this for free. After I got the first book they put out I bought this at the same time just to see if it was some what better but it was the same. I wouldn't buy this book but instead image search your designs and ideas.....

I bought the first one as a inspirational tool but lost all of it when I viewed what was inside, Paid for the third one in hopes of getting it back and to give these books another chance but disappointment was all I saw..
