About the Author

Andrew J. Williams is Professor of International Relations at the University of St Andrews. His main research interests include international conflict resolution, international history and international organization. His book Liberalism and War: The Victors and the Vanquished was published in 2006.

Amelia Hadfield is Professor of European Affairs at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB), as well as Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of European Studies (IES). Her broad research interests include foreign policy analysis, diplomatic history, IR theory and the foreign policy of the European Union. Her research monograph, entitled British Foreign Policy, National Identity and Neoclassical Realism, was published in 2010.

J. Simon Rofe is Senior Lecturer in Diplomatic and International Studies in the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. His research interests lie in the broad field of diplomacy and international relations, particularly in the international history of the twentieth century, and focus on US foreign relations with the rest of the world.

review on STUDY GUIDE

after being utterly discusted with this poor excuse of a study guide, i thought i would read some horrible reviews on the guide to make me feel better. to my dismay, people can't read and they only posted reviews for the text book, which is actually good but those reviews should be posted elsewhere.

You know there is something wrong with this guide when you see them call CH3-CH3 methane (pg 3 not to mention they got linoleic and linolenic mixed up) or on the multiple choice on page 19 has ribosomes as one of the right answers for proteins involved in transcription.

i have not done a lot of the questions in the book and all ready i see errors on every second page. i wonder if i will actually recieve lower grades if i study from this poorly written book.

I love study guides and have used them for stewert's calculus, campbell's biology and bruice's organic chemistry in college. were there some occasional mistakes... yes but overall they were good. this study manual however seems to have been written by a tribe of wild monkeys pounding on a keyboard. Save your 23 dollars

Shiller does to the Effecient Market Theory what Columbus did to the flat earth theory. This is one of the finest books on markets I have read, and I have read hundreds.

A low volatility review

I give this book 4/5 stars despite the fact that it appears to deserve full credit because a) I'm not smart enough to fully understand Shiller's work, and b) the average book should earn around 3 stars. By recognizing my own lack of understanding, I admit that portions of Shiller's analysis which appear to be both interesting and correct, could in fact be wrong or misleading and therefore less deserving of stars. My lack of understanding creates volatility in my rating ability. By averaging my belief that this book is worth 5 stars with the long-run average review of 3 stars, I should reduce the expected error and volatility in my book reviews.

The book is very interesting if you like this sort of thing, but it's also a very challenging read. My background in finance is stronger than my background in math and statistics, so I usually had to read the book with wikipedia nearby to reference math terms. Even with wikipedia, the equations got too hairy for me to follow with less than 100% concentration. I found myself flipping back pages almost as often as I moved forward, and there were parts I had to just skip over. If you read this book be ready for a serious challenge. Caveat emptor.

I am a futures trader/ stock investor/ produce distributor. My constant involvement in markets of one kind or another led me to develop a deep desire to understand volatility. Unfortunately the only books I could find dealt with option volatility. "Market Volatility" has been THE best book dealing with market mechanics that I have ever read. I recommend the book as a "must have" to my friends in the industry.

This book was ok. I was hoping that the part where it said styles of today was really styles of today. I could have spent my money on another book worth $40. Great for a coffee table book not for a reference for styling.

Detailed Photos

Admiring the black and white photos in Sagay's book is a delight. The hair styles are exotic and complex. She describes two different techniques, cornrowing and hair threading, with enough clarity and step by step photos that it is possible for a beginner to achieve one of the styles. There are also many outragously time-consuming examples that would challenge the most proficient hair stylist to reach new heights of difficulty. Sheer, outrageous fantasy is the only way to describe some of the hair styles, but they are still fun to see. Sagay gives a fair amount of historical background to show where and when the hairstyles originated. I was fascinated to discover that some of the hairdressing ingredients used in Africa were oil, charcoal and clay. The faces of the women and girls in the book are serene, joyful and proud. I wish that the book was updated to show current styles and that some of the photos were in color.

Amazingly Lovely

These hairstyles are "a blast from the past" and no matter what type of hair you have, you'll enjoy the many photos. The subject matter truly transcends ethnicities. You will learn about different cultures as you view the creative "hair art". My god-daughter wants to attend a highschool cosmetology course, so I bought this book as an inspiration. It worked! :)

The Gauntlet has been thrown down

A very short enjoyable read between two powerful individuals, we had the pleasure of meeting in Stone Guardian. Right from the start, we were given the sense, that there was a lot more going on between these two. For one thing, he makes her hyper aware of herself as a woman. She comes across him on a rooftop and though he's the enemy, he doesn't attack. The banter between them is wary and almost playful. Fallon is a very strong warrior, but even she knows how dangerous her companion is and treads with a light touch. We are given a minute glimpse into her past that may show she's not as much of a hard case as she wants everyone to believe. There's a vulnerability that she tries very hard to keep under wraps and the Vampire Master comes too close to getting through walls she didn't even know were there. She just might have met her match in the sultry Vampire Reign, not one known to shows softness, seems to have a soft spot where Fallon is concerned. It will definitely be interesting to see these two strong individuals cross paths as the fight for the Realms has just begun.

Short. So short but sweet.

This short is just that. Barely a breath of a story. It reads like a memory. Fleeting yet lovely. Of all the characters in the Entwined Realms I must say Fallon is the most interesting for shear fact of character. This story offers no insight into her Guild Service. No light into who or what Tenro really is. One could almost say however that this truly is a stand alone story. A brief but intense interlude which offers something not seen or even hinted at prior. Something which leaves you satisfied in the way a piece of Halloween candy does. Small but wonderful. I only hope to see this story, that of Reign and Fallon fleshed out somewhere in a longer and more complete tale.

Dave Ulrich is Professor of Business at the University of Michigan and co-founder of The RBL Group, an education and consulting firm that helps organizations and leaders deliver value. He has published 12 books and more than 100 articles. Norm Smallwood is co-founder of The RBL Group and co-author of four books. He is also on the faculty of the Executive Education Center at the University of Michigan Business School. They are co-authors of Results-Based Leadership and How Leaders Build Value.

Leadership is more than individual leaders

Thousands of books have been written for leaders. Like a leader that stands out from the pack, a new leadership book must present some significant new insights to prosper in this crowded marketplace. Hard on the heels of their last successful book, How Leaders Build Value, Dave Ulrich and Norm Smallwood produce another winner. How's that? A mix of reliable advice combined with some new insights which include:

' Leadership is more than individual leaders. "An exceptional individual leader may deliver outstanding results for a while, but the quality of leadership is what sustains results ... Leader emphasizes the qualities of the individual and how he or she leads and engages others ... leadership emphasizes the quality of leaders throughout an organization."
' It focuses on results, not on the traditional personal characteristics of leaders. "Our study of leadership began with a simple premise: leaders must deliver results ... the leadership field has become so enamored with competencies and personal characteristics of leaders that the leader's job to also deliver results was almost forgotten."
' Its leadership focus is from the"outside/in instead of the inside/out." "Outside in means that customer (and investor) expectations should frame, focus, and influence leader behaviors. When leaders know and do things that add value to customers, they are more likely to be doing the right thing."

HOW THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT:
Concentrates on leadership as a company endeavor, not as a matter of individual growth.
The authors attempt to get you to analyze your company's leadership from the outside in.

STRENGTHS:
This is truly about leadership development in the company.
The chapter on "Assessing Leaders Against the Brand" is worth the price of the book.
Good research and citations.

WARNINGS:
You may have trouble reading this book from cover to cover.
What's here is far too programmatic to be practical taken whole.
The concept of "Leadership Brand" may get in your way.

BOTTOM LINE:
If you're interested in leadership development, this book should be on your shelf.

There's not much new about leadership. But every new leadership book attempts to give you something unique, a new way to look at the subject, new things to try, or old things to try in different way. Every book tries to shift your thinking.

Leadership Brand by Dave Ulrich and Norm Smallwood attempts to shift your thinking from studying leaders to studying leadership and toward influencing how leaders connect the company to customers and other "outsiders." They work through the metaphor of a "leadership brand," which they tell us is "the identity of the firm in the mind of the customers made real to employees because of customercentric leadership behaviors."

That quote tells you that this book will stretch your thinking about leadership development in your company. It also tells you that the authors are overanalyzing and, yes, branding the process they describe. Here's a quick chapter outline

Leadership Brand concentrates on leadership as a company endeavor, not as a matter of individual growth. That makes it different from most leadership books, but similar to recent books like The Leadership Pipeline.

The authors also attempt to get you to analyze your company's leadership from the outside in. This is a powerful concept and one you can use in any company.

If you start thinking about leadership development by thinking about the results that need to be produced, you will see things that you won't see with the "competency" or "trait" approach. You will also be able to identify the ways that leadership at your company needs to be different than leadership at other companies.

STRENGTHS

This is truly about leadership development in the company. It will help you develop a leadership development program or modify what you've got.

The chapter on "Assessing Leaders Against the Brand" is worth the price of the book. This chapter is filled with tools and references that will help you assess leadership and leadership development whether you use the authors' program or not.

I love leadership books that are well-researched. Because the authors describe their thinking and support their points with research, you can judge whether you agree. You can also adapt a point or suggestion more effectively to your own situation.

WARNINGS

You may have trouble reading this book from cover to cover. The prose is absolutely tortured at times.

What's here is far too programmatic to be practical taken whole. Like so many programmatic books, this one lays our multiple, detailed steps and makes it seem like you go through them, bang-bang-bang in a linear fashion.

The fact is that the kind of changes the authors are calling for require changes in multiple company systems and in the culture. It's a generational process that will take years, not months.

The concept of "Leadership Brand" may get in your way. It did for me.

I never understood how a "leadership brand" was different than the culture and values of a company. Ultimately I just substituted "culture and values" in my head every time I read "leadership brand." That seemed to work fine.

BOTTOM LINE

If you're interested in leadership development, this book should be on your shelf.

It's easy to pick out what makes a particular brand distinct and valuable... Apple, Costco, Wal-mart all have a definite public perception that drives their operation. In the book Leadership Brand: Developing Customer-Focused Leaders to Drive Performance and Build Lasting Value by Dave Ulrich and Norm Smallwood, the authors contend that each company also has a "leadership brand" that helps drive that public perception and that enables the company and employees deliver on those expectations.

Ulrich and Smallwood do a good job in changing the way that an organization's leaders are normally viewed. Using the "brand" concept, building and promoting leaders is based on an underlying element that lends a continuity to how the company performs and delivers in the marketplace. These types of leaders are the ones that allow a company to consistently lead their market niche over a long period of time. It's obviously not a "quick-fix" solution to a company that's failing. You don't just decide "here's our leadership brand, so lead in this way" one Monday morning. Using the measured approach outlined here, it's possible to start to attract and promote the type of person that will complement the core message of your company.
