another cliffhanger book

What is wrong with authors that tell you "here is the book I wrote" and then you find out there's NO ending in the book. You've wasted a day reading it. I guess I'm old school expecting a book to have a beginning, a middle and an ending. I won't read this author again. Common courtesy would be to at least warn you in the book description that it is a cliff hanger book.

Not finished

This new fad of writing a book and not finishing it, only to HAVE TO purchase a second book to find out the end is totally stupid. I spend all this time invested in reading only to be robbed by no ending. I would have bought the second book if I enjoyed the first, but since I didn't get to finish the story, I put the author on my never purchase again list. Shame too because she has great promise with this book. Instead, I took my copy, fixed the typographical and grammatical errors, and got together with my book club and we wrote our own ending. At least we were able to salvage our investment.

No enidng. They just want you to buy book 2 and book 3 to know the ending.

This book is a scam. They want you to buy #2 and #3 books and maybe another book.. The book just ends with the reader left confused and not knowing what will happen. The book ends with her in the hospital, seriously injured hating him and he taking a ride on his motorcycle still wanting her. You have to then purchase books 2 and books 3 to see how this all turns out. for these two people.
I often read and very much enjoy a series of books. I like a series of books in which each book is about different residents of a town or a series each book about different relatives in a family.

Pay Attention to the Editions, There are some notable differences

There were two editions of this Robert Graves Classic: "Goodbye to All That" made by the author during his lifetime. The first came out in the 20s and was raw and popular and controversial. The second came out in the 50s and was somewhat bowdlerized by the author, because several of the people involved were still alive. His nephew oversaw an edition in 1995 which explained some of the reasons for the changed second edition and restored some of the original material. If you pay attention to details, find out which edition you are getting. I have downrated this edition because it is the second. I purchased the Richard Perceval Graves version off of Amazon about a year ago.
If this is too nitpicky for you, the second edition is still very good, it is missing some interesting material however, particularly the opening poem by Laura Riding and Graves' interesting dedication to her at the end of the book.

I was hoping for more unhinged bee references

Somehow this book made me want to be a turn of the century British boy who ends up fighting in the first world war. I could write that exact same review about a lot of books, but this one did it more.
Some of my school years were spent tracing this good fellow's bee obsession, which somehow never involved reading this one; I had thus high expectations of for a bee-based theory of the war, or some terrifying bee event in his early youth, but if it was there I missed it.

Very good memoir of World War I

There's not a lot I can add to what other reviewers have already said about Graves's memoir, so I'll dispense with a summary and say briefly what I liked and did not like about it. Take it or leave it.

First of all, Graves knows how to write--this memoir is just as entertaining and fun to read as any of his novels. His literacy and narrative ability immediately set him apart from many of the other World War I memoirists--whose books are often clunky and poorly written--as do his wit and his eye for the significant detail. The book is very funny in many places and deeply moving in others. His descriptions of trench life are suitably depressing, as are his tales of the randomness of World War I violence and even the suicidal tendencies of some of the soldiers.

The only things I disliked about Good-bye to All That were Graves's obvious bitterness and the lackluster final third. Graves, of course, is entitled to be bitter about the war--it was a terrible experience for thousands of people--but his view of the war as expressed here is imbalanced. His narrative is significantly skewed and rather self-pitying in places. Also, the strength of his narrative peters out near the end, when he spends some time teaching in Cairo. The last few chapters read more like notable miscellany than a coherent memoir.

Those two misgivings aside, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Not only was it a good memoir, it was a remarkably good source (I read this for a graduate seminar in World War I) for the attitudes and ideals of the "sensitive artistic types" following World War I. If you're interested in comparing this memoir with a vastly different perspective, I recommend reading it along with Ernst J�nger's Storm of Steel.

Outstanding!

Year to Success is a refreshing and unique perspective on getting what you want from life. The step by step formula keeps you interested and engaged, but more important, it keeps you motivated to ACT. It is evident that the author speaks from real world success. It is also clear that the purpose of this book is truly to help others get what they want out of life as opposed to just another book to get the writer some notoriety and attention. From someone who's achieved a great deal of success in my own life, I can tell you I'm learning A LOT from this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to live a successful life that has meaning and purpose.

I'm not sure how this book can't change your life for the better

I have read my share of self help books and Bo Bennett and I have read many of the same ones (according to his many references in the book). This is a great book that distills many of the key learnings he has had and I love the action steps. For me, I think the way I am going to use the book is to revisit the action steps as often as possible to move from the learning position to action. I had a hard time not reading ahead and now I will revisit the "days" that I think that will really help me grow now. Great work to the author, thank you for your contribution to readers.

Badly Written, Poorly Thought Out

If I can prevent anyone from wasting time and money on this book, I will be pleased. It is written on the level of a bad high school newspaper. Moreover, although it is a coffee table book, clearly intended for English speaking readers who are not familiar with Indian cinema, it is not organized to translate the Indian film titles into English, and it rattles off those incomprehensible names without ever describing what the film is about. IT IS NOT WRITTEN BY ISMAIL MERCHANT! He wrote the foreward; and I don't know why he did that.
