Finally!!!! A well-written math/physics text!!!!

I am so sick of physics and math textbooks, since 80% of them are just absolutely pedagogically TERRIBLE. (I won't name any names, but let me just say "standard electrodynamics graduate text"-- now do you know who I'm talking about? Anyway...)

Let me take that back: closer to 90% of physics and math textbooks have major fatal flaws.

Not so this book. It is just about perfect!

It avoids all the major flaws, and succeeds brilliantly where others fail.

First of all, many other physics/math textbooks-- even so-called "introductory" ones-- take too much for granted, and often leave the reader lost or needing to cross-reference another book in order to fully understand. Not so this book. You need little background knowledge other than standard undergrad math to understand this book. That is, the book is self-contained, and provides all necessary information to learn the topic at hand. (+1 Star.)

Second, many physics textbooks read like theoretical math textbooks--many mathematical derivations with little reference to physical systems. Not so this "math" book! The authors take every effort to give concrete and understandable physical examples to explain Group Theory-- and this from a so-called "math" book, too! This increases the level of comfort and understanding immensely. (+1 Star.)

Third, many other physics textbooks give page after page of mathematical derivations, but then no EXAMPLES as to how to use the conclusions of those derivations to solve real problems (cf. "lazy" below.) Not so this book!! The authors here present full and complete mathematical derivations, but then also give full and complete SOLVED examples! On top of this, they then provide homework exercises with useful hints as to how the problems can be solved. (+1 Star.)

Finally, other textbooks often seem lazy--- they skip major steps in derivations with words such as "clearly" and "obviously" and "derivation left to the reader." This makes learning extremely difficult. On top of this, the explanations that ARE presented are often obtuse and extremely difficult to understand. Not so this book! The authors actually take the time to EXPLAIN things-- and what's more, they explain them WELL!!! They explain them step by step. They explain them CLEARLY!!! Wow! What a concept! A textbook that actually explains things clearly and completely! (+2 Stars.)

So, in conclusion, if you have any need to learn Group Theory, this is the absolute best place to start.

(A bonus hint: If you happen to be writing a math or physics textbook, you might also want to take a look at this to see how it's done!! Please? Please?? Pretty please??!!....)

My choice for a course on group theory for physicists

Very good book, a fine replacement and updating of the book by Tinkham on the same subject. Carefully written, doesn't avoid the "difficult" points, which become not so difficult, after their treatment. The applications cover Rotation Group, Point Groups, Electronic States of Molecules and Crystals, Molecular Vibrations, Time Reversal, Landau's Theory of Phase transitions, the Symmetric Group. Plenty of exercises, answers and hints. I've taught from it. Highly recommended.

James D. Miller is an IBM-certified, accomplished senior engagement leader and application / system architect / developer / integrator with over 35 years of extensive application and system design and development experience. First and foremost let me say I enjoyed the first book and was very excited to purchase this book on the
expectations that this would surpass it. I was not disappointed the book delves into the extensive concepts of
Big Data and intelligence gathering concepts used in the real world, that said I have one extensive criticism and that
would be the instructions given on setting up the tutorial data. The Event generator is not really windows friendly and instructions
are not quite clear on setting it up... the instructions given do not work within windows as given and I suppose were only tested in a Linux
environment. It would help immensely if the Writers could address this issue with a solution for windows installs concerning the event generator propagated by Splunk making sure step by step instructions are given to make the data work with Splunk. Much easier to work with examples in book.

Great getting started guide for Splunk

This massive volume (clocking in at over 450 pages!) is easily one of the better IT books I've read in the past few years. Although its called Implementing Splunk it DOES NOT cover installing the software. Check the documentation for that. What it does cover is getting started with using the software, and working towards more in-depth scenarios and configurations so you can handle a wider variety of data, with better dashboards and visualizations. I think one of the best parts of this book is the number of screenshots with clearly marked emphasis on the areas that the author is referring to in the text. That in itself makes following the text much easier, since you aren't hunting around trying to find the setting, menu or piece of information, but you can immediately see it. Need touch!

Some good information, but doesn't hit the target.

Dr Windell's book is really more about general parenting than dealing with oppositional children. He barely discussses Oppositional Defiant Disorder(ODD), and then in a clinical framework. The big problem is the author wants to blame the parents for a child's oppositional behavior. "No child is born oppositional" he states, "They are made that way". Unless you have lived with ODD, you just don't understand. And, Dr Windell's children are no doubt GFG(Gifts from God), and he doesn't understand that parenting contributes, but most certainly isn't the whole problem. Ask any parent who has as ODD child and a non ODD child, parented the same. There is something there besides bad parenting.

I found the information in this book very helpful. I have two very small children and it helped me distinguish what is normal for their ages and what is inappropriate behaviour. I prefer using non-physical methods of discipline and I am happy to see a book that is focused on this.

`The Great Powers and the European State System, 1814-1914� is a full analytical narrative of the functioning of the European states system over the nineteenth century between the fall of Napoleon in 1814 and the outbreak of the First World War just one hundred years later.

It examines the variety of devices, manoeuvres and feats of statesmanship by means of which decision-makers managed the interplay of their interests, common and conflicting �including the dangerous Eastern Question� without exposing Europe to the catastrophe of a general conflagration:

• systems of active co-operation, such as the �Congress system� or the Concert of Europe
• periods of �international anarchy� in which, if wars were endemic they were at least limited
• the stabilizing effects of the predominance of conservative status quo Powers in the Bismarckian era
• the dangerously polarised system that emerged on the eve of the First World War.

At nearly double the length of the first edition, this book is a very major revision and update. It includes not only the results of the latest research, but a body of additional information and a number of illuminating maps that will make the subject even more accessible to readers.

Jeffrey Weeks is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at London South Bank University, having previously held senior management posts there as Executive Dean, (Arts and Human Sciences), and University Director of Research. His publications have been chiefly concerned with the history and sociology of sexuality and intimate life, and he is the author of more than a hundred articles and over twenty books. Recent publications include The World We Have Won (2007) and Sexuality,�third edition (2009).
