About the Author
Rabbi David Fohrman lectures internationally on Biblical themes. He heads the Curriculum Initiative of the Areivim Philanthropic Group, and directs the Hoffberger Institute for Text Study. He currently resides in Woodmere, NY with his wife and children, where he also serves as resident scholar at the Young Israel of Woodmere. Rabbi Fohrman's first book, The Beast that Crouches at the Door, was a finalist for the 2007 National Jewish Book Award. In earlier years, Rabbi Fohrman served as a senior editor and writer for ArtScroll's Schottenstein Edition of the Talmud, and taught Biblical themes at the Johns Hopkins University. This is Torah learning as it should be.

I cant praise the Rabbis intuitivness enough in peeling away the layers of context and subcontext in the book of Genesis. You think that having studied Rashi(considered to be the pre-eminent authority when it comes to Torah interpetation), and others such as Rambam, Malbim, Ramban and Ibn Ezra, and many modern Jewish theology including those with radical notions on what is happening in the text, that you have studied it all.
Well guess what? Close to forty years im studying and this Rabbi comes along and make mockery of all I thought I knew. I thought I asked all the possible questions on oxymorons, improbabilities, contradictions and sometimes plain incrdulousness at how the narratives unfold. Well I guess I wasnt all that smart having missed so many of the finer details of whats happening in the text expounded on by the Rabbi, but gosh he makes it look so, "why didnt I think of it" simple that I just have to kick myself. I look foreward to many more years of kicking myself if only the Rabbi will oblige us by putting more of his teachings put into print.

Finally.....the Truth

I want to point out one thing: This book is NOT only for jewish people. It is for anyone of any religion (or no religion) who is interested in the Bible or the Adam & Eve story. It is definitely also for people who made fun of the story and think it's just for kids - this book shows that by asking the most difficult questions in the Adam & Eve story, one actually comes to a true understanding of what the Bible is trying to tell us. ALL questions can and must be asked!!

Otherwise, I fully agree with the comments in the other reviews. This book is a very readable, yet deep and true-to-the-text analysis of the Adam&Eve/Cain&Abel stories. It's not some homiletic interpretation of the Bible but a very precise, critical, compelling analysis of what the Bible is really trying to tell us. ...and (while the author doesn't address this directly) this helps better understand mankind, the human condition, and...ourselves.

Rabbi Fohrman has been teaching a refreshing and insightful analysis of the Hebrew Bible now for years but his first published book brings it all together in a wonderfully cohesive and readable manner. He has an excellent point to make: the Hebrew Bible from the very beginning has much to teach us about ourselves today but only if you examine it carefully for all its messages. Rabbi Fohrman is a master teacher and his writing is always engaging--you have to keep turning the pages. I can't recommend this book highly enough for anyone interested in what God has to say to each and every one of us. Thank you, Rabbi Fohrman.

Readers suffer with the 15-year-old as he makes his painful decision to leave his mother and younger siblings and attempts the dangerous border crossing, jumping trains, fleeing thieves and border officials, and suffering from thirst and hunger. His desperation and fear are completely believable as he faces near-death situations and must decide whom to trust. The author deftly weaves information concerning the local geography and customs into the plot. The story is well paced, sustaining readers' attention throughout. No longer able to grow corn profitably in his Mexican village, 15-year-old Victor, who has supported his family since his father's death, resolves to go to El Norte: "It's time for me to do what men from our village have to do." Lacking the money to secure a guide, he ventures to a border town to wait his chance in the "whirlpool" of recent deportees, newcomers, and grizzled mojados ("wetbacks"). Successive attempts find him trekking through mountains and desert, fleeing la migra, and unwittingly becoming entangled with ruthless drug traffickers. Hobbs' effort to show a broad view of the border-crossing experience, often by incorporating the hard-luck tales of Victor's acquaintances, results in a story arc that occasionally feels artificial. But the questions raised here are provocative and worthwhile ("Are [Americans] willing to pick the fruits and the vegetables to fill their grocery stores?"), and the propulsive adventure-and-survival elements will keep Hobbs' core audience hooked. Timely and insightful story

Read this book because it was assigned to my son for his summer reading program. What a great story! It should generate lively discussion in his freshman class about immigration. The story of Victor and his friend, Rico, trying to make their way across the boarder is compelling especially given their ages. Hobbs paints a descriptive picture of the Mexican border and their many trials and tribulations....fascinating stuff and definitely recommended.

What I liked was that Victor and Rico went to cross the border between the two countries Mexico and the United States of America to send home to there family money and how Rico went back in return to see his parents. I think that my family and friends should read this book because I think that they would like it like me .

Mr. Hobbs has used vivid imagery to recreate this suspenseful , and at times a graphic tale of a 15year old, Mexican boy's illegal trek across the U.S. border. He encounters mules, coyotes, and many helpful yet wise travel companions. He learns about life along his arduous journey as he strives to fulfill his goal to feed his family in Silao, Mexico.

Best Description of MXF Technology and Metadata Structures

This book explains how MXF files standards the interchange of media files and streams between different systems. It includes a lot of good diagrams that identify and summarize complex metadata structures used in MXF files. Includes lots of details on the history of why and how MXF was developed. It covers the relationship between MXF and MPEG, AAF, EBU and SMPTE standards. If you are looking for a good understanding of MXF, this is a great book to have.

bad printing

I was looking for a book on MXF and so i've bought this book.

Unfortunately most of the the images in the book are dithered and so the text in these images is difficult to read, sometimes impossible to read.

Also, the table of contents only sums the main chapters but not the paragraphs inside the chapters. So you have 30 or so pages which you have to scan through page by page to find a particular subject. The paragraphs on the pages are not numbered which makes it difficult to get an overview where you are and how the paragraphs are related.

Off center designer warrants off center book

This is a great book on a very unique designer. I like how the collections are divided and discussed and how each collection was given a logo so that you can place each photo to the matching collection. Be aware that the book looks like it is printed off center at an angle. I actually called Rizzoli and they told me that that is the was the designer wanted to book to appear.

limited details, very basic info you could find on the web

I guess I should've known better to look at the author's credentials before I purchased the book. Steven D. Fisher is an independent writer, illustrator, and instructional designer. (exerpt taken from the book bio at the back) Not necessarily the best person to learn the complexities of commercial real estate from. The book had some useful business and very basic real estate refresher type material but lacked the details I was expecting to find for a book entitled 'The Commercial Real Estate Investors Handbook'. I have a background in commercial real estate finance and found the lack of detail in the 'commercial loan documents' section neglecting critical details about how loan documents can make or break a deal and you as the investor. If you know absolutely nothing about commercial real estate, this book would be helpful as a simple introduction but nothing more.

The worst real estate book I have ever read.

This book is for kindergarten level investor. Book is easy to read and the author lays out concepts that is common sense but lacks any benefits for its reader. If you are a novice, this book is for you. I stopped reading after page 16, then skim through the rest of the book in less than 10 minutes. Some parts are clearly erroneous. Here is a sample excerpt from the book. Please tell me if this is logical: "An apartment building appreciates faster than single-family homes because it costs more in the first place. A single-family home worth $300,000 appreciating at 10 percent generates $30,000 worh of appreciation. An apartment building worth $1,000,000 will generate $100,000 worth of appreciation at 10 percent, meaning more cash in your pocket" Now, people who gives 5 stars, ARE YOU SERIOUS???

In short, it covers everything a beginner would need or want to know before embarking on this type of investment.

That's not all it covers. There's also information about commercial real estate loan documents, an explanation of leases, negotiating purchase agreements, managing tenants, insurance, sale of commercial real estate properties, marketing real estate properties, and taxes. Two appendices include sample lease forms. A glossary is beneficial to beginners who haven't yet mastered real estate and investment terminology.

About the Author
John Hawkes�(1925–1998) was a postmodern novelist born in Stamford, Connecticut, and educated at Harvard University. He was noted for his unconventional style and views on the creation of literature and was admired by Flannery O’Connor, Robert Penn Warren, Saul Bellow, Anthony Burgess, Jeffrey Eugenides, and Donald Barthelme.

Hallucinatory Trip

Heavy symbolism. In fact, the entire book seems comprised of symbolism so if you're looking for a plot this isn't the book for you. Shoots back and forth from Germany 1918 to Germany 1945. Think Ageyev or Kiesbye meets B�ll. Think Hawkes.

Underestimated Genius

John Hawkes is a master of allusion and sordid subtleties. In *The Cannibal*, Hawkes' apocalyptic vision of post-war Germany attacks the reader in the form of an ever-deepening chill. Readers of Gunter Grass's *The Tin Drum* will find an interesting parallel here in Hawkes' sterile world. This man is one of the greatest, most difficult writers of the twentieth century. I also highly recommend *The Lime Twig.*

well-written incoherence

"The Cannibal" is an engaging, flowing novel that is also completely flat (in character and description) and jumpy, with no emotional involvement and even less dialogue (if that's a gesture of defiance toward literary convention, it certainly doesn't work). Is it possible for a book to be completely incoherent and confusing during and after reading, but still keep your finger on the next page? Apparently so, as this is certainly not the worst book I've read. It's unmemorable, sure, but John Hawkes at least exhibits a style that's free of the outright pretension that befalls authors like Pynchon and DeLillo. Interpret it how you may: "The Cannibal" is a book about nothing (maybe incoherence and WWII), but it is well-written, therefore it avoids a one-star rating.
