Essential reading for therapists and supervisors
By Zoe
Prof. Skovholt has written the book I wish I'd read when I was a novice therapist. Here is the condensed wisdom of a very senior practitioner, teacher, mentor, and researcher about what to expect, from your first day at graduate school as you begin training as a therapist, right up to the attributes of a master practitioner. The entire journey is clearly mapped out.
You'd expect, with the 30+ years of research and teaching that inform Prof. Skovholt's writing, that this book would be as dry as a desert, but it's far from it. There are anecdotes, personal stories, the words of practitioners, and humour to help your reading. There is a great deal of kindness in the writing. Prof. Skovholt tells it like it is - he doesn't pull his punches - but at the same time, he normalises, reassures, encourages, and inspires.
There is something in this book for practitioners/therapists at every stage of their careers. It is also a very important book for supervisors to read. Therapists' needs in supervision change as they develop, and supervisors need to be aware of this. An exemplary contribution to the literature.

As someone who enjoys training and frequently has the privilege to supervise practicum, intern and entry-level psychologists, I want to express how helpful “Becoming a Therapist” has been to me. It has been an excellent resource as I try to conceptualize trainee needs and identify appropriate approaches to helping them navigate their own development. The book is comprehensive in its review of various facets of therapist development and provides practical/applicable and strengths-based approaches to assisting new therapists. It also provides something of a roadmap for anticipating what is ahead as professionals continue to develop throughout their careers. I highly recommend it for the novice and for the experienced therapists.
