Darrell Bock is Executive Director of Cultural Engagement and Senior Research Professor of New Testament Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. He is the author or editor of more than thirty books. His recent publications include Truth in a Culture of Doubt: Engaging Skeptical Challenges to the Bible (with Andreas J. K�stenberger and Josh D. Chatraw) and Parables of Enoch: A Paradigm Shift (with James H. Charlesworth).

The Meaning and Historicity of Mark

Dr. Bock offers a short but helpful commentary which provides grammatical-historical information and commentary on the text of Mark. He pays special attention to the "issues of meaning and historical background" (xi). Consequently, one of his major goals throughout appears to be making a case for the validity of Mark's presentation of Jesus as a historical figure. In his discussion of the introductory issues like author, date, and setting, Dr. Bock converses with a variety of popular commentators and issues brief comments on the majority views often presented. Perhaps the most interesting portion of his introductory material are the compelling arguments for the general reliability of Mark as a historical document: Jewish apocalyptic context and culture, archaeological information, messianic expectations, etc.
Following the introductory material, Dr. Bock gives a section by section recommended bibliography which is quite thorough and would be useful for seminary or doctoral student researching the respective section.
In line with his initially stated dual purpose to discuss meaning and background, the commentary addresses sections and verses for the whole of Mark. It contains a helpful mixture of grammatical observation, historical background, literary observations, and discussion of validation issues. In Dr. Bock's view, Mark details how the historical Jesus was in fact the messiah: a regal and suffering messiah with the mission of bringing the kingdom. Bock argues for a Markan high Christology as developed in the multiple parallels between the activity of Jesus in the story and God in the Old Testament. He also sees Jesus' death as a part of God's mission for Jesus to bring the kingdom. He leans slightly in favor for an intentional ending at 16:8.
Occasionally Dr. Bock interrupts his commentary on Mark with material from a synopsis of the other Gospel materials. In my view, this tends to cloud Mark's own particular theological perspective at the expensive of getting at what actually happened in history. However, this commentary should be considered among the array of options, if for no other reason that it offers an up-to-date bibliography and an interesting case for Mark as a reliable historical testimony to the life of Jesus. Anyone interacting with Mark and questioning Mark's historicity would be well-served to read this work.
