More accessible than Celce-Murcia

I was asssigned this book in a non-credit ESL pronunciation course, and found it a bit less complex than the "bible" on the subject, Celce-Murcia. Good clear explanations throughout. This subject involves some memorization and study to master it properly, but as a teacher you'll be amply rewarded when with a few tips on lip and tongue placement the correct sound magically emerges from your student's mouth. Has a good section on specific problems depending on the L1 of the student.

A great pronunciation reference

I use this book quite a bit when teaching pronunciation. While this smaller volume isn't as thorough as Celce-Murcia, et al.'s Teaching Pronunciation... I find that it's a very good supplement. I use the two books together. A practical and very classroom-oriented guide for teachers. Recommended.

Superhero YA Adventure

This book is basically like Percy Jackson meets Avengers. It starts out with Marrow- he is the main character- trying to score really high on his superhero placement test. He's basically a really powerful superhero who has the power to change his bone density, allowing him to smash through walls and jump really really high since he can make himself very heavy or very light. He gets teamed up with his least favorite superhero as his sidekick, Flex. Flex has stretchy powers, and Marrow think that's kind of dumb. They end up having to figure out how to work together even though sometimes they really get on each other's nerves. There's a super awesome climax that I won't spoil here, with twists that you don't expect. You just have to read it for yourself.

I would see this book is really good for anyone who likes Hunger Games or Maze Runner, but it also has an added touch of humor that makes it unique. It's especially awesome if you love comic books or superheroes. Even if you don't you will be engaged with the story. I recommended it!

There's nothing wrong with the premise of Marrow - only in the execution.

Our main character has a superpower that would kill him the way he uses it. The reader is left to guess whether our hero doesn't understand that he's super strong and borderline invulnerable or if someone flat-out lied to him about it. The ability to increase your bone density doesn't make you stronger. Just the opposite, in fact. It would weigh you down. At one point he smashes through a car - and does so without so much as a scratch. Your bones could be solid steel, but your skin and organs would still be pulped.

Our main character is 14 years old, for reasons that escape me. Maybe because despite being lauded as a genius, he's really, really slow on the uptake? His age might be an excuse for the reader to cut him some slack. Honestly, it's fine - I'd just cut the line or two where people praise him for being smart. I don't see superheroes lining up to train fourteen year olds, though. The liability insurance alone would be insane. Was the age chosen just to avoid too much romantic subplot? To aim the book at younger readers? It comes off as being an arbitrary and poorly justified choice.

Telekinetic + Telepathic does not equal Omnipotent. Again, I could see how the writer wants to stress what a useful, powerful combo that would be... but 'all powerful' is a bit much. It was such a bad choice of term it yanked me right out of the narrative. Why not 'Advanced Mind' or 'Dual-aspect Mentat,' or just about anything that actually pertains to mental powers and not godhood?

One person in every 20 in this world has superpowers. That's insane. That's six or seven times as many demigods walking around as there are rich people. You'd be overrun by villains. FedEx would be entirely staffed by teleporters and speedsters. Never mind superheroes, if 5% of the cops have powers. Also the military... you'd have super-geniuses running businesses and colleges and the unpowered would be all but literally begging for scraps. Even if most people with powers have minor powers, that many of them would seriously reorder the society in ways that aren't touched on in this story.

All that having been said - it was a fun read. Well paced, with characters that weren't unlikable. I would have preferred to see the protagonists aged another five years, and the book doubled in length and taken more seriously by the author... I'm glad I read it, but... there was a lot of potential here that was never explored.

A book worth getting lost in! "He's Batman!"

I know when I am really into a book, because I will stop reading at certain parts and wait until I have a secluded area and plenty of time, with no interruptions, so I can get everything I can out of a scene. While reading Marrow, I had many moments like that. The writing style I found to be quirky, and full of originality. It was just plain, good writing and it flowed. The way the protagonist, Marrow, describes certain places and people made me laugh. I loved his cocky attitude, and his good heart. It had great twists here and there, and I loved that the story unfolded in a non predictable way. It was a new take on superheroes, and yes, just saying "He's Batman," does justify any situation. You'll understand when you read it.

The Blacktooth Ridge, far to the north and east of the more civilized lands, is fabled for its string of long abandoned fortresses, treasure houses, temples and underground mansions. This alone is an invitation for many an adventurer seeking fame and fortune. But it is an altogether dangerous place, tainted with the evil of the Horned One and those who still worship him in hidden caves and darkened temples.

Now, raids and plundering confound the settlements near the Blacktooth Ridge. The armies of King and Lord are warring in the west and few are left to protect this region. Rumors of Rottenkip the Goblin King and his fearless warriors taking up residence in the Blacktooth Ridge are circulating. Ogres and Trolls are raiding villages and looting caravans. Few are coming to the aid of those beset by these depredations and the evil denizens of the Blacktooth Ridge continue to spill out of the Blacktooth Ridge.

The call has gone out, the mustering of militias is at hand and the Blacktooth Ridge beckons to any and all willing to come to their aid and discover what is calling forth these foul creatures.

If you play Castles and Crusades this is probably a module you have run or will. If you don't you may want to import it to any D&D like rules set. Basically there is a village that needs help with some local problems that are terrorizing the local peasants. The baron is unable to do much other then collect his taxes. Enter into this the PCs who can be from the village or just wandering through and need some adventure. This module reminds me a lot of B1 Search for the unknown and B2 keep on the Borderlands for D&D Basic from years back. This module is a good intro for players and castle keepers new to the Castles and Crusades system and needing a starting module. The module doesn't drown you with details but gives enough bare bones info for a CK and lots of random monster tables and info on the nearby terrain so a CK can throw in their own encounters and make up some of their own lairs for critters. With the info on the locals and the NPC's' a CK can flesh out all sorts of NPC encounters and interactions or ignore it all and do a "go from the village to the dungeons" sort of thing. Let the players tell you what they want to do and go from there. Anyways if you play Castles and Crusades this module is pretty much a must as its a "classic" and if you play D&D its still a good buy as it converts easy enough as it uses some pretty standard monsters, gives some good maps of a starting village and gives some flavorful NPCs which can be used or ignored as you see fit. One thing is keep in mind that at its price you aren't getting a mountain of material this module is inexpensive and for that you are getting a bare bones treatment of a village, some NPC's, some random encounter tables. maps of terrain nearby with suggestions on what lurks where and a couple short small lair maps with a listing of whats in what lair. All in all I think this module was one of the better RPG purchases I made in awhile. Anyways the module is for lvl 1 to 2 characters to start and a CK/DM has plenty of room to add to it so characters could spend several levels doing stuff in and around the village. There is more danger as you go farther afield so you could add to the stuff in here and stretch it over several gaming sessions fairly easily. This module is well worth the money.
