About the Author

Matt Garrish lives and works in Toronto where he does what he can to help bridge the print divide that sadly still keeps much of the world's literature and information from being available to everyone. He's worked closely with CNIB and the DAISY Consortium in their efforts to make the world a more accessible place — including editing the Z39.86 Authoring and Interchange specification — and drew on his years of experience ripping the guts out of EPUBs to make braille when invited to work as the editor of the EPUB3 revision. He is the author of "What is EPUB3?."

Markus Gylling has worked in the field of information accessibility since the late nineties. As CTO of the DAISY Consortium, he has been engaged in the development of specifications, tools and educational efforts for inclusive publishing on a global scale. Markus is the chair of the EPUB 3 Working Group, and during 2011 he lead the development of the EPUB 3 specification. Since October 2011, he serves as CTO of the IDPF alongside his job with the DAISY Consortium. Markus lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.

Get working with EPUB

This book is an all you need to know book on EPUB3 and is a good introduction into general eBook design and development. The book covers all aspects of this document format going into detail about package content, XHTML, semantics, accessibility, styling, styling embedding fonts, multimedia and interactive elements as well as pitfalls.

I am involved in the creation of online eLearning content and wanted to get a good understanding of how to create content for eReaders. I have looked and use multiple document formats including mobi, EPUB, iBooks and HTML in addition to existing formats including PDF and Word. This books easy to read and works on a number of levels. Working on educational textbooks Fixed Format EPUBS with read aloud capabilities are of interest to me as well as providing a more interactive and engaging experience within a digital book. This book is very informative and provided the level of detail I require. I am continuously going back to the book and to learn more about EPUB.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in publishing for eReading systems and EPUB in general.

Highly technical (as you might expect from O'Reilly) but full of useful information that I've not been able to find anywhere else on the web. Highly recommended for anyone getting into ePub development. Designers, I would recommend knowing front end coding first or else this book could easily seem too complex.

Comprehensive "best practices" will save developers from bad results

It's one thing to know how to make something; it's another to understand how to make something as good as possible within the constraints of technology. Matt Garrish helps us do the latter. He moves pretty quickly through all parts of EPUB3, but he slows down to give in-depth examples just when they're needed.
The only aspect of EPUB best practices that I missed, was more visual presentation of the interaction of HTML code and image display in the discussion of the fixed layouts versus reflowable. Garrish refers us to free samples in the online EPUB3 resources, which is helpful, but I would have liked more visual examples within the book itself.
Also, an index is included but it's hard to navigate. It would have been helpful to have links to each alphabet letter at the top of the index.
Neither of those reduces the overall real value of the book, which I think is terrific for anyone who wants to make the best EPUB3 that they can for a book they're working on.

Finding our inner soul

I feel quite renewed having just read Kerry Howells's new work, Gratitude in Education, a Radical View. Being familiar with Kerry's past work on awakeness I was looking forward to engaging with her book and its ideas. Much to my surprise I found myself totally engaged with myself, specifically .... my inner soul.

I would recommend this book to any educator, in any field of education who desires to forge a stronger connection with their learners. In the spirit of Parker J. Palmer, Kerry's approach picks up on the notion that 'we teach who we are'. That we as educators potentially hold more power to impact our students' learning through the agency of 'giving'. While reading Gratitude in Education, I was reminded of Parker J. Palmer's statement, there is; `no question that students who learn, not professors who perform, is what teaching is all about ... [however] teachers possess the power to create conditions that can help students learn a great deal - or keep them from learning much at all'. I think this quote captures much about Kerry's practice as espoused so intimately.

There is a narrative that flows through this carefully crafted and highly reflective piece of work that invites the reader in, as if to say ... 'does this sound familiar to you?', if so ... 'you are not along, and perhaps the use of gratitude in education can offer you potential solutions to the challenges we all face'. I was challenged in a positive way, recognising that I have more positive emotions to inject into my teaching and general relations. I did not expect to gain this realisation from Kerry's work, but despite the tight focus (i.e. gratitude) it is obvious that the application of this concept is unrestricted in our daily lives.

There is a shift in thinking required for us to elevate gratitude into our approach to organizing our thinking; for some of us this will be a natural and relatively pain free process. For other perhaps not so. That others will ignore the ideas and contributions contained in Kerry's work does not lessen their importance or usefulness. It merely speaks to the differences that exist between educators in terms of their teaching philosophies, their teaching contexts and ultimately their desire to make a difference.

Personally I am delighted that Kerry's sees the ironic short comings of `a student-centred approach' that perhaps assumes the student positioned to be that of `reciever'. Kerry identifies the opportunity to develop a state of `Preparedness', from which I suspect, she is arguing for a `learning-centred' perspective to emerge. Ultimately, we (as educators) are constantly in receipt of 'gifts' from our students and we have a choice how we receive and whether we choose to celebrate such gifts appropriately. I for one will be viewing my student's gifts with more humility as a result of reading Gratitude in Education.

This is an extraordinary book

This is an extraordinary book. It takes us on a journey of discovery about the powerful effects of the practice of gratitude by the author and many teachers and students.

That being more grateful for what we have received can make us happier is not a surprise to most people. There exists a body of research in psychology, sociology, and economics uncovering the powerful role of our inner attitude, emotions, and expectations. But that the practice of gratitude can serve as an effective teaching and learning tool is a novel proposition, and an important contribution. As the book explains: `When teachers are full of negative complaint, their inner attitude flows to their students. When students have an inner attitude of complaint, they cannot be present enough to learn.'

While extensively researched, with interesting quotes ranging from philosopher Immanuel Kant to economist Adam Smith, to author Virginia Wolf, it is not excessively theoretic. The book is written from `a world that speaks of gratitude with a multitude of different voices, feelings, opinions, beliefs, and connotations.' The used impressionist ethnography narrative style draws you in, and makes the book characters' stories and experiences resonate with your own. You get to know Sophie the teacher, Julie the assistant principal, Rose the honours student and many others, and the story of each of them provides both inspiration and strength to do things differently in the classroom, staffroom, and at home.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, reading the book gives the feeling that a story can be worth a thousand pictures. Some of the book's stories will stay with me for a long time. For example, how teacher Adam dealt with an ongoing difficult situation by telling each and every student what he valued in them (and how the students spontaneously did the same about Adam). Or how Joseph the refugee was able to look upon his life - full of horrific acts of violence against his family and people - with gratitude, and see his suffering as his treasure.

Not to let gratitude `loose', the book offers a framework to examine the subtleties of the concept. It covers a lot of interesting ground, just a few areas I found most insightful: (i) the different nature of practising gratitude and positive thinking or instant gratification; (ii) the interplay of `gratitude to' and `gratitude for'; (iii) the dangers of the `us and them' mentality; (iv) gratitude as a way of recognizing the other (the French word for gratitude is reconnaissance); (v) the close relationship between thinking and thanking (elaborated by Martin Heidegger); (vi) the State of Preparedness framework; and (vii) the hidden downsides of online learning.

While this makes the book beneficial to researchers, it will be equally valuable to teachers, students, and parents. It shows what commonly stops us from being awake during our learning, and offers tips on how to stay attentive and interested. It inspires us to look not only for what we can receive from the learning experience, but also what they can give. It provides numerous examples of how to unravel `the sticky web of ingratitude' that we reside in most of the time. It can all start with the realization (as expressed by Rachel Carson) that: `Underneath the most annoying behaviour is a frustrated person who is crying out for compassion'. The journey can then continue by practising to `extract benefits from adversity', as Joseph the refugee did. In this respect, the example of Eastgates Primary School shows how practising gratitude together with colleagues helps build the social capital within an institution.

The book is however careful not to over-emphasize the role of gratitude. It stresses that it is not `the only transformative for healthy educational communities or enacting powerful pedagogy.' It also provides examples of the limitations of practising gratitude as it `lives and breathes in a context'.

I believe that after reading the book many teachers and students will do things differently next time they step in the classroom. They will be more grateful for the opportunity. They will better balance their giving and receiving. They will be more empathic and humble, accepting that `we are not perfect, and so we have no right to judge or criticize others or, importantly, ourselves.'

If reading this book has had no positive influence on your life/teaching/learning then perhaps its time has not yet come for you. Come back to it later. As the author stresses, the practice of gratitude needs `to flourish in its own time, at its own pace'. Nevertheless, once we practise `seeing things as a gift', and focus on what we can be grateful for, we are empowered to choices `more likely to bring about positive outcomes.'

I'm a slow reader and got through it in 10 minutes. I'm enthusiastic about trying his suggestions. As the author said, they are almost unbelievably simple. The weight-loss idea seems a little too good to be true but I'm going to give it a fair test. If it works for me I'll be back to give the book that 5th star.

A valuable resource... for the right reader

When a math book uses the phrase "from the book," in the title, you know they're being ambitious. The reference is to Erdos's description of wanting to experience the mathematics in "God's Book," of all time beautiful problems. And in large part, the authors live up to their ambitions. This book is a collection of excellent, deep problems, along with how to attack them.

Be warned, though, that the barrier to entry is extremely high. A remarkably bright math student I know said that this was the first book recommended to him when he became interested in math contests... at the age of 10. The experience of trying to read it proved very discouraging for him. I can imagine no 10-year-old, no matter how brilliant, who would benefit from reading this book. The appropriate audience is probably 1 in a million high school juniors or seniors, and 1 in 50 college mathematics majors. Basically, if you can get a problem right on the Putnam and you want to take it to the next level, then this book may be for you. I'd say that a Masters level mathematics education is the right background.

For those who have the experience, the interest, and the capacity to handle the technicalities (and there are many), this is a book that pays back the effort you put into it. There is a wealth of problems, many quite beautiful, and while some of the strategies for dealing with them have a "trick" quality to them, others are wonderful. I'd recommend this book especially to mathematics graduate students looking for ideas to pursue during the summers or other time off.

Her main research interests include cultural history, twentieth century literature, film studies, animation, advertising and Gothic fiction. Read this book

This is the 4th in the Lone Star series and is a little more serious than Katie Graykowski's other novels. She tackles a hard topic in the book, one that hit close to my own heart, and one that I fear more people can relate to than not. The topic is that of loosing a child before it even has a chance at life. Yet Ms. Graykowski tells Debra's story with the dignity and respect it deserves. But that is not the whole of the story, it is still a fun filled read with lots of appearances of some of our favorite characters like Sweet Louise and others. This book made me laugh out loud, made me cry, and helped me heal a part of my heart. It's smart and funny and worth a read. The entire series is fun, and everyone of her books will find you smiling by the time you turn that last page.

Debra Covington and Warren Daniver were in love when they were young

First of all I have to say that it took me a bit of time after reading this book before I could sit down and do some type of review. The reason for that is the very sensitive subject of losing your child at birth. This subject really kind of knocked me down a level that day. And so...my review:
Debra Covington and Warren Daniver were in love when they were young. He came from a family of little or no money, and she came from a very mega wealthy family.
Debra becomes pregnant. Her father tells Warren she had an abortion and offers him $1 million dollars to not have any further contact with her. He believes she has aborted their child. But that is far from the truth. She learns he accepted this money from her father and leaves home. She seeks help from a friend of her late mother and receives no support of any kind from her father.
She works to save money for the birth of her baby. She has no insurance and cannot afford any advanced prenatal care to determine if there is anything seriously wrong with her son she is waiting for to be born. Then heartbreak for her as the son she has been preparing for dies at birth.
She is devastated and vows to get revenge on Warren.
He has over the years turned that money her father gave him into many millions of dollars. He becomes owner of the Lone Stars football team.
Debra makes it a mission to sleep her way through his team members thinking only to hurt him. In the mean time she starts working for Safe Place which is a place for domestic abuse victims to go for help. She is good at her job and deeply invested in its success.
Consequently Warren decides to win Debra back into his life.
And since I do not want to give away more events in the book I strongly urge you to read this book if you are a true fan of Katie Graykowski.
But I will say the loss of Debra's child at birth did literally bring me to tears and I had to take a break from the story. It is a very sad event and it brought back an event that happened to my husband and I. When I was pregnant with my second child in the late 70's the Dr. I had allowed me to go a full month past my due date. Carly died while I was still carrying her and ultimately was stillborn. I cannot adequately put into words what a devastating time that is for a prospective Mom and Dad to go through.
But the very way that Katie Graykowski made her way through this subject was handled with great dignity and sensitivity. I applaud how she was able to relay this tragic event.
If you have been reading this series I hope you will read this latest addition and watch how Debra and Warren determine if they can ever come together again.

I liked the other books in this series, but this one was disappointing. not only was it boring, but it wasn't believable in the least. She spent TEN YEARS punishing him and forgave him instantly. He forgot the allergies that could kill her, but he spent their time apart pining over her. In the middle of football season, every player drops what they're doing every single day to have pot luck dinners with their friends. The whole thing was just ridiculous and there were MANY grammatical errors as well. Seemed very rushed or "phoned in."

This book provides an introduction into the fundamentals of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. In Part 1, the essential principles are developed. Applications and extensions of the formalism can be found in Part 2. The book includes not only material that is presented in traditional textbooks on quantum mechanics, but also discusses in detail current issues such as interaction-free quantum measurements, neutrino oscillations, various topics in the field of quantum information as well as fundamental problems and epistemological questions, such as the measurement problem, entanglement, Bell's inequality, decoherence, and the realism debate. A chapter on current interpretations of quantum mechanics concludes the book. To develop quickly and clearly the main principles of quantum mechanics and its mathematical formulation, there is a systematic change between wave mechanics and algebraic representation in the first chapters. The required mathematical tools are introduced step by step. Moreover, the appendix collects compactly the most important mathematical tools�that supplementary literature can be largely dispensed. In addition, the appendix contains advanced topics, such as Quantum- Zeno effect, time-delay experiments, Lenz vector and the Shor algorithm. About 250 exercises, most of them with solutions, help to deepen the understanding of the topics. About the Author

Jochen Pade studied physics in Freiburg (Germany), where he made his PhD in theoretical physics in 1978. Since 1980, he has been a�lecturer at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg (Germany). His research interests are: Theoretical physics, didactics and popularization of science.

About the Author

Donna Druchunas, author of How to Knit Socks That Fit, is the author of six knitting books, including Arctic Lace, Successful Lace Knitting, Kitty Knits, and Ethnic Knitting Exploration. She teaches knitting workshops in the United States, Canada, and Europe and has three online sock-knitting classes with more than 25,000 students on Craftsy. She lives in Vermont with her husband, mother, and three cats, who all help her test the usability and comfort of her finished knitted items.

A great instruction book for knitters seeking better ways to knit socks that fit.

I would like to thank Story Publishing for providing me with a free ARC of this book in exchange for an open and honest review.

‘How to knit socks that fit’ is an interesting book. As a person with big feet and who is a novice knitter I was really looking forward to reading it. As, yes, finding socks that fit is one of those minor banes of my existence. And I was not disappointed with this book. I simply need to get a chance to sit down and have a go!

Sometimes I felt this book perfect for a novice knitter with no sock knitting experience (AKA Me). At other times I felt it expected you to know how to knit socks already and this was just a continuation of that skill. Not in a bad way, and I never truly felt over my head, but some new and novice knitters might. I have the safety net of knitting family members and a spinner’s guild to fall back on if I get stuck in such a book… But as not everyone has such a safety net, I was a little concerned the attitude of ‘you know what I’m talking about’ I sometimes got from this book would put some newbies off.

Add to that I found the layout formatting sometimes a little sloppy – a section would start with the title at the bottom of one page, but the actual section in question all on the next page – and I found myself having to not give ‘How to knit socks that fit’ the full 5 stars. As a document writer myself soppy formatting is a pet peeve of mine and so can be a cruel reviewer when I see it. ;-)

But saying that, I still found the majority of the instructions well written and the book deserving a high score. I really loved the fact the pictures were in black and white so you could focus on the pattern and design and not be influenced by colours. And I loved the overall tone of the book as it reminded me of my spinning guild. A warm and friendly voice chatting away to you helping you work your way through the different methods within the book. This is the strongest connection I got from the book – it was FRIENDLY! It was approachable and therefore readable by any skill level. Well, that’s my opinion anyway.

I also loved the details given in the book to help educate the reader and improve their knitting skill. From the types of yarn, needles best to use at the beginning of the book, through to the different types of stiches and how to do them, glossary, abbreviations and suggested reading at the back – it just added to the whole friendly atmosphere generated by this book!

Would I recommend this book to others? Yes I would. But probably only to knitters who know more than just the basics. And also possibly only to those with some experience with knitting socks already. As I’ve said, I’ve not knitted socks before and parts of this book did cause me a bit of confusion. But most of it was something I could really work with.

Would I buy this book for myself? Yes I would. Big feet and a love of knitting draws me to this friendly and easy (mostly) to follow book. I can see it being added to my Amazon wish list in the near future.

In summary: The title says it all really. This book really is all about ‘How to knit socks that fit’ and something I think any knitter with a desire to knit socks would enjoy. I highly recommend.

Great introduction to knitting socks!

I'm a fairly new knitter, but I knew from the beginning that I wanted to learn to knit socks. I've been looking at several different books, sites etc., but How to Knit Socks that Fit by Donny Druchunas seems perfect for a beginning knitter. Druchunas covers the history of knitting socks, techniques for cuff down, toes up, how to knit with double-pointed needles, two circular needles or using the "magic loop" method. In addition she covers other ways to do the heel, toe, and different ways to vary the cuff. I enjoyed How to Knit Socks that Fit so much, that I will be ordering my own copy to keep for reference.

LOVE THIS BOOK!

I received "Knit Socks That Fit", yesterday. I sat down and started reading. I've taken a couple of sock knitting classes, but I still didn't quite understand socks. This book is clearing the cobwebs for me. So EASY to understand!!!! AMAZINGLY CLEAR!!!
